Here we are yet again! Another New York Fashion Week for the books. As I state in every single recap post I do, every year is challenging yet rewarding for myself. I feel like I learn more and more every season and I also find my own personal self every single season. This past Fall Winter 2020 season really resonated with me for a few reasons and I felt my most “me” during this time. As with anything, you are constantly learning every year you take on a Fashion Week and it was always my dream to make it into at least one show in my life. To say now that I’ve been a part of multiple seasons and getting into shows I’d never dreamed of truly is a humbling experience.
Fall Winter has to be one of my favorite seasons to view. The layers, textures and designs are so incredible to see and while it’s my favorite season to view, it’s not necessarily my favorite season to dress in NY for haha. This season wasn’t as cold as last year (luckily) but it definitely makes for getting dressed a little more challenging. While most shows are inside (especially during this season) there are times where you have to wait outside in line, or run to another show immediately after so you really do have to dress for multiple temperatures. You don’t want to overheat inside the show but you also don’t want to freeze on your way to your next show or meeting. I just wanted to recap on a few things that really made me grateful for this season and what I learned this time around as well as try and answer some questions I’ve had a few people ask in the past.

Shows & Partnerships
This season I was lucky enough to finally be able to attend the Self-Portrait show, it had been a long term goal of mine to finally attend and seeing the invite in my room really made for a memorable moment. On top of that, Bevza, Claudia Li, Tibi, Dorothee Schumacher, Sandy Liang, and Collina Strada were amazing shows, presentations and experiences that I am so grateful for. I also was able to work with one of my favorite online luxury retailers Farfetch that has an amazing assortment of luxury brands that I really enjoy shopping from. They have some amazing sales throughout the year plus their customer service and shipping is really quick. The entire above outfit was all loaned from them to wear out to a few shows and events. What’s great about Fashion Week and what some people might not know is that a lot of the pieces we wear are loaned to us and then returned. It makes things a lot easier in terms of packing plus you get to wear newer or perhaps just released pieces and return them afterwards. It’s always fun and exciting to be able to style something new but as we all know, not all pieces would fit permanently into our wardrobes so being able to return them after ensures we aren’t wasting anything plus we still get to revel in the beauty of these pieces.

New Home Away From Home
One of the better experiences this season was staying at the Ludlow Hotel . Usually hotels would be chosen based on location or price but this time we decided to slightly splurge and take on the Ludlow. I’ve stayed at this hotel a few times prior to Fashion Week and it always felt like I was HOME when I stayed. The rooms are comfortable, the bathrooms are impeccable and the staff are so welcoming, accommodating and friendly. Not to mention there is SO MUCH good food around this area. I realized one of my biggest challenges at other hotels was the surrounding areas had no good food options. Nothing quick and delicious or even a good coffee spot. Staying here made the stay even more relaxing and gave us a great home base in between events and shows.
Traveling / Staying with Friends
One of the best parts about Fashion Week is connecting with friends. Running into people you don’t see as often at shows is always so much fun not to mention being able to attend shows and events with your friends makes the experience so much more memorable. This season I traveled with my good friend Kathryn as well as had my good friend Megan at the same hotel as us. It made things so much easier to be able to carpool to shows or grab dinner or shoot photos during down time. Staying close to friends this time around made the trip that much more enjoyable. It’s also something I recommend in finding a group that makes your experience pleasant and calming since it can be such a crazy week.

Sticking to my Style & Embracing Textures/Structures
I always have a mild panic episode about a week before I leave for Fashion Week. Every season I’m pretty well prepared pulling outfits, buying a few small pieces and just working out my closet to get my outfits together. Usually I try and dress per show I’m attending but the issue is that you don’t always get confirmation to shows until sometimes the day before it’s happening. While I try to give myself ample time it gives me a little too much time to start rethinking my looks and having some self doubt. This season I tried to focus more on textures and structure of pieces versus trying to put too many crazy pieces together to make a statement. I usually tend to lean towards crazy colors and prints to make a statement but this season it felt more ME to stick with cool structures and textures. I have to say that my outfits were some of my personal favorites this season.
Fashion Week, What can I do to get there?
This is a really common question I get. While I’m absolutely no expert and still feel very novice in my experiences and connections I can see why there is a lot of questions and curiosity around it. A lot of people want to know how they can attend Fashion Week and what it takes to get your foot in the door. The truth of the matter is that “influencers”, “content creators” and “bloggers” are still relatively new to Fashion Weeks. There are still a lot of brands who don’t understand nor find the value in having us in attendance and there are so many other established relationships that already exist that making your way in can be challenging. As with anything in life it’s all about your passion, purpose and drive. If fashion is your true passion and your purpose in attendance is to see, view, share and support the designers (even after the shows happen) and if you are driven to create the connections and content to drive attention towards yourself there isn’t a reason you can’t be in attendance. Ultimately you have to ask yourself why you want to attend. If it’s because everyone’s doing it, you have FOMO, or think it’s the “next step” in what you should be doing it might be time to rethink your purpose. While we all get envious of seeing others online there are plenty of bloggers I know personally who just aren’t big fans of Fashion Week. It’s not for everyone nor does it have to be to be in this industry. My biggest piece of advice is to solidify your passion, purpose, and drive when it comes to attending and everything should fall into place. While I’ve been attending for multiple seasons I’m still learning and growing and have yet to achieve every show and invitation I desire but with that I will continue moving forward and finding ways to make those connections because it’s truly what I desire for my future in this industry.
Now that’s quite enough yammering from me. I hope that this somewhat helped and/or gave up some additional insight into the good, the not so good, and the true nature of how my season went this February. I’m just as hopeful and excited for next season and I’m sure it will approach faster than I anticipate!
